Preparation for marriage is WAY more important than any facet of wedding planning. As the saying goes, “A wedding is a day…a marriage is a lifetime.” (Or so we hope!) Premarital counseling helps couples to build a solid foundation BEFORE marriage.
I am a certified facilitator of the Prepare/Enrich Inventory and have also facilitated the FOCCUS (Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study) Inventory. Both of these are premarital questionnaires that help to see what areas engaged couples have particular strengths in and which areas they may need further work in. Counseling can help engaged couples to explore these areas in a safe and productive way.
Years later many couples will say that premarital counseling was the BEST thing they did for their relationship.
Conversely, those who don’t do premarital counseling often come in for marriage counseling saying, “We realize now that we should have done premarital counseling…and we wish we had.”
As you make plans to get married, consider giving yourselves the gift of premarital counseling. It is a priceless investment in your marriage! (Sometimes close friends or family give “Premarital Counseling” as a gift to an engaged couple. A truly valuable gift.)
